Design Engineers are Artists of Engineering

22/7/2021

PUNE: One week online Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “Recent Advances in Mechanical engineering” inaugurated by Dr.Manikrao Salunkhe,VC,Bharati Vidyapeeth .It was organized by Department of Mechanical Engineering, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Engineering, Pune (BV(DU)COEP).

This FDP is organized with sponsorship from AICTE Training & Learning (ATAL) Academy. Also present for this for the inaugural function were Dr. Anand Bhalerao, Principal, BV(DU)COEP and Chairman of FDP, Dr. K. B. Sutar, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department and convener of FDP, Dr. S. P. Singh, Professor,
IIT Delhi and 250 participants of the FDP.

Dr. Manikrao Salunkhe, Vice Chancellor, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pune, said “Design Engineers are Artists of Engineering.” He said that Design Engineers are artists of engineering because, while engineers provide a technical solution, engineering design implies a solution that is aesthetic as well, and  they could contribute lot in nation development. He said that design engineers are the reason why human race has raised from the stars and peered into the mysteries of the universe. He concluded with the remark that, demand for the design engineers shall continue as long as the human race exists.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Anand  Bhalerao, said that Supply chain, business and education are the most affected areas in the current pandemic situation. Speaking further, he said faculty development program always helps to improve academic knowledge. He introduced the contribution of engineers by sharing some examples of excellent revolutionary research work in the field of Mechanical Engineering like the perfect light absorption structure developed by Georgia Tech university to minimize artificial lighting, fully transparent solar power generating window to transform efficiently in to the electricity through solar cell and use of acoustic waves to separate out the contaminants of water without use of any filters or chemicals.

Further he shed light on present economic condition of country. He mentioned that India has foreign exchange reserve of 600 billion dollars. He said that, this reserve is sufficient for importing in the country without requiring to exporting any material for 2 years.

Equipments and devices required in the field of communication are still not manufactured in India, he quoted. He further said, conflict with China in Galwan valley was mainly for control on silica and water required for the manufacture of semiconductors and at international level there is a hidden war for semiconductor chips. He invoked the participants that electric vehicle, its battery, life of battery and performance is also one of the challenges hence engineers should think beyond boundaries of their disciplines, accept the challenges and find solution for betterment of the society.

Dr. S. P. Singh, Professor,  IIT Delhi, speaker of the session  discussed about Internet of things (IOT), 3D printing, compliance mechanism and biomedical instrumentation and their significance in the upcoming years. He also elaborated the importance of sustainable design and sustainable manufacturing to minimize carbon foot print and plastic footprint. He explained the role of  mechatronics, in the robotics devices, sensors in building of bridge, sensors in the machines for decision making, as well as to send information from one machines to another machines with the help of Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning. Dr. Singh futher urged the participants to collaborate in multidisciplinary field to produce sustainable and affordable product

Dr. K. B. Sutar, convener of FDP and Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, presented the welcome address, Coordinator of FDP Dr. K. A. Rade proposed the vote of thanks. Mr. D. D. Mohite hosted the inaugural function.
