MNGL : Boosting Pune’s green future

PUNE: Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) is a City Gas Distribution entity, a joint venture of two Maharatna PSUs, GAIL (India) Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) having equity participation from Government of Maharashtra through MIDC and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL).

MNGL started its journey in the year 2006 under the patronage of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Govt. of India. MNGL is authorized by Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), Govt. of India to Lay, Build, Operate & Expand City Gas Distribution Project in the following geographical areas: Pune City and adjoining areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad along with Chakan, Talegaon & Hinjewadi, Nashik, Dhule & Sindhudurg Districts in Maharashtra, Ramanagara District in Karnataka and part of Valsad in Gujarat.

As a sole distributor of Eco-friendly Fuel, it has stayed true to its objectives of providing clean, environment friendly green fuel - CNG, as an alternative to the conventional auto fuels like Petrol & Diesel and providing safe, convenient & reliable Piped Natural Gas to its customers in the Domestic, Commercial and Industrial sectors in Pune.

Today, MNGL proudly operates:

• A vast network of 1700 Kms. (1450 Kms of MDPE pipeline and 250 Kms of steel pipeline) making it easily accessible, across its authorized Geographical Areas.

• Fuels nearly 3.0 lacs vehicles including more than 1700 PMPML Buses with its CNG supplies

• Energizes more than 3.20 lacs domestic kitchens through its Piped Natural Gas

• Efficiently fuels over 350 commercial customers and over 200 industrial customers including some of the notable automobile companies and luxury brands

MNGL, since its inception, has accomplished many milestones, few of which are:

The first LNG/LCNG station of MNGL at Nashik on Golden Quadrilateral is likely to be commissioned in March 2021. MNGL is aiming to commission two new LNG/LCNG stations at Pune & Dhule by March 2022. MNGL is also supporting Government’s initiative to set up & encourage production of CBG for use in vehicular sector to reduce polluting emissions and also to promote the vision of Clean & Green India.

MNGL has also taken pioneering initiative of award of CNG Mobile Refueling Unit (MRU) which is first of its kind in India. MRU can supply CNG with ease to areas not connected with pipeline and benefit the society. MNGL is also developing reverse engineering projects with leading institutes of India to benefit its customers with ecofriendly fuel (CNG) in the Two-wheeler segment.

Post lockdown, considering the financial hardships being faced by the auto rickshaw drivers and in order to provide CNG kits for conversion from Petrol to CNG without any upfront investments in the new GAs namely Nashik, Dhule, Sindhudurg & Ramanagara, MNGL is in dialogue with Banks and retrofitters. The retrofitters will bring down the cost of CNG kits, Banks will provide loan to the auto rickshaw drivers at a low interest rate and MNGL will bear the interest charges of the auto rickshaw drivers for say initial 6000 kits. The running charges per km with CNG as a

fuel is almost 1/3rd compared to that of Petrol. Thus, the auto rickshaw owners will save a huge amount per day say Rs.200 to Rs.400 depending on the total km run and through a payment of say Rs.40 to Rs.50 per day they will be able to repay the loan amount within a period of 2 years. Thereafter, they can run the three wheeler for its entire life. This process will facilitate conversion of three wheelers from Petrol to CNG without any hardships and rather with much financial benefits.

MNGL aims to expand the network continually to provide complete customer delight by supplying Natural Gas at the doorsteps of the customers at an affordable price. MNGL plans to achieve a mark of 150 CNG stations covering all GAs by December 2021. In next 3 years, around 40 to 50 more CNG Stations and around 1 lac Domestic Households per year will be added in next 3 years.

Despite challenging times in 2020, MNGL left no stone unturned to serve its esteemed customers and employees. MNGL ensured 24x7 uninterrupted gas supply to all Domestic Household, CNG as well as Industrial and Commercial customers so that they don’t face any issues and received lot of appreciations from different corners.
