Pune companies resume work again

PUNE: About 1,500 companies in Pune division have resumed operations following the state government’s decision to partially lift the lockdown and allow resumption of business and industrial activity in areas where there are zero cases of coronavirus, or the numbers are not rising.

The Pune division comprising five districts ― Pune, Satara, Solapur, Sangli and Kolhapur ― and is home to some major industries and business houses. Prashant Girbane, Director-General, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), said, “We are told that approximately 1,500 companies of different shapes and sizes are working in Pune Division. Half of those are in Pune district. These are either ‘essential’ manufacturing or services or units in zones like Jejuri, Kurkumbh, Bhigwan, Indapur in Pune District.”

He added that the number of employees with passes to work is less than 5 per cent of the pre-Covid-19 times. Girbane said that the State should go for more tracing and testing and at the same time the Centre should release the stimulus package for MSMEs well before the MSMEs deal with monthly salaries and wages next week. He insisted on better coordination between government officials and industries.

“There should be daily updates through a Webinar/VC call over web. MCCIA hosted one or two such calls and is willing to host it daily so that there should be no confusion. Senior government officers like the Divisional Commissioner, Collector, Commissioner and Industry Officials like Joint Director and Regional Officers of MIDC should also join one brief daily call,” he said.

Last week, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had announced that the industrial units in the orange and green zones will operate but the workers will not be allowed to leave the premises. The raw material for industrial production and grain supplies for the workers would be provided at the site. Businessmen are being informed that they can commence production if they are willing to take care of their workers. However, no permission has been granted for inter-district travel until May 3.

Lockdown to haunt RTO registration on Akshay Tritiya

PUNE: For the first time, there will be no registration of vehicles at Pune Regional Transport office (RTO) on Akshay Tritiya, which falls on April 26. Only a few vehicles were registered on auspicious Gudi Padwa last month.

"With everything closed, there will be no registration of vehicles on the auspicious day. This will happen for the first time here. The situation is expected to continue till May. Even if the lockdown is partially eased in Pune after May 3, we do not expect a major spurt in revenue in terms of new vehicle registrations, which have completely stopped from April 1," said a RTO official.

Generally, the number of registrations spike a week before Gudi Padwa, with people preferring to bring home new vehicles on the day of the festival. "Currently, the RTOs in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad are providing permission to vehicles carrying goods. As many as 8,950 vehicles have been provided online permits to ply. Passes have been provided to 3,523 vehicles in Pune and 5,400 vehicles in Pimpri Chinchwad," another RTO official said.

The official said that some registrations had taken place during Gudi Padwa last month. "But we are yet to calculate the figures. At present, all work related to registrations, licensing and issuance of permits has stopped," the official said. Last year, the registration of vehicles during Akshay Tritiya was decent but far less compared to 2018.

Earlier, Virmeet Singh Maini, president, Pune auto dealers’ association, said that with all the showrooms shut, the sector had been hit the worst. Another two-wheeler dealer said, "Though we have received many queries, but we don’t think people will start buying once the lockdown ends."

LPF distributes 650 packages to needy people

PUNE: Lila Poonawalla Foundation has practiced for last 25 years, the fundamentals that we must do what we can for those people who are less fortunate than us. Practising this belief, they have till date supported close to 10,000 girls to complete their education and become economically independent.
Under COVID 19 initiative. Lila Poonawalla Foundation distributes 650 food packages to the needy people of the society. A large number of School children supported by LPF live in borderline incomes. Their parents are daily wage earners. They have lost their daily wages. This led LPF to think differently. Can something be done for such families? And thus, started a new project “COVID 19 Help to the needy.”

Under this project over one month’s provisions are distributed in packages so that they get two square decent meals. The fight against COVID 19 cannot be achieved without nutritious food.

The journey started with Lila and Firoz Poonawalla pooling in the start-up funds and soon followed donations from friends, families, well-wishers, LPF Trustees, Office Team and Alums.  Collection of money was just one aspect of the project but reaching the packages to the deserving recipients was a unique and a difficult task to fulfil. Firoz Poonawalla along with two volunteers from the office namely Yogita Chaudhari, and driver Babasaheb had to go to the wholesale provision store, get the packages ready and collect them, weighing more than 16 kgs each and deliver them in different parts of the city.

This was a challenging job as they were risking their life in doing this extraordinary charitable work. All this would not have been possible without the magnificent support given by the Commissioner, DCP and ACP of Police. The entire police involvement was unique. They sent their Van in which up to 100 packages could be fitted and this cavalcade of police van, their Jeep and Office Car would reach the different distributing sites, crossing all barricades, because of the police support. Our hats off to the Police of Pune.

Cos can’t sack employees: may get lawyers’ notice

PUNE (NEW DELHI): In an innovation during the unprecedented lockdown, two lawyers replicated the Supreme Court's three-decade-old PIL concept to suo motu issue legal notice to three software companies warning them of consequences for serving termination notices on many employees and announcing salary cuts for others.

Citing the prime minister's appeal to employers not to lay off any employee during the lockdown period, advocate Rajesh Inamdar and T C Shaikh sent legal notices to two Pune-based firms and a Gurgaon-based company for issuing termination letters to nearly 100 employees and also announcing salary cuts for others.

Normally, an advocate issues legal notice on behalf of his client. But in this case, the two advocates decided to act suo motu after being informed about a large number of employees losing jobs at a time when they are forced to stay home because of the lockdown. They reminded the company owners about their possible prosecution under the National Disaster Management Act for sacking employees during a pandemic.

"When things stood thus, it has come to light that you have illegally placed over 100 employees working for your company under notice period without any cogent and valid reasons. Further, you have also denied salary to several other employees and sent them on forced leave. What is appalling is several employees are also put on notice since mid-March with no indication about their future prospects with the company," the lawyers said in their notice.
