PUNE: German
technology firm and automotive supplier Mahle opened its Global Mahle
Engineering and IT and Sales Service Centre in Pune to make internal combustion
(IC) engines green as well as to cater to electric mobility.
The stringent Bharat Stage VI emission norms will be
implemented by 2020 affecting two and three-wheelers and not just four-wheelers
across categories in the country. All vehicle manufacturers are required to
move from the present BS IV to BS VI by April 2020 providing huge business for
the German firm and its rivals.
Mahle products are fitted in at least every second vehicle
worldwide. For decades, Mahle components and systems have also been used on the
world's racetracks and off the road - in stationary applications, for mobile
machinery, rail transport, as well as marine applications.
Mahle India, the 15-year-old firm in the country, whose
revenues grew 10 per cent last calendar year to 278 million Euros or Rs 2,400
crore, is also eyeing the fastest growing two-wheeler market for growth. Officials
said India is the largest two wheeler market which sold 25 million units last
year. They said even if Mahle gets 4-5 per cent of this with stringent emission
norms in place, it would be a huge growth driver for the brand.
"India is an important automotive market for us and with
increase in GDP it is poised to become the third largest market by 2030,"
Arnd Franz, Member of the Management Board, Corporate Executive Vice President,
OE-Automotive Sales and Application Engineering at Mahle told Financial
Chronicle.
The 12.8 billion euro Mahle has 16 major development centres
worldwide with 6,000 development engineers working on innovative solutions for
the future mobility at various centres.
