Oscar-winner from Pune feels gaming is the future

PUNE: Dr Manhattan from Zack Snyder’s ‘Watchmen’, the CGI-heavy baddies from the Spider-Man series, the entire cast of heavyweights from Robert Zemeckis’s ‘Beowulf’ have the trailblazing know-how of Pune’s Parag Havaldar in common. Havaldar, a student of St Vincent’s High School in Camp, helped develop the expression-based facial performance capture technology. “What we tried to accomplish with Beowulf was ahead of its time,” he told during a visit to Pune.

“Zemeckis is a visionary director. He was clear that he wanted only performances. His idea was, ‘Why don’t we just capture the actors and get the emotions out? Everything else -clothing, make-up or lighting - can be done in post-production,” Havaldar added. Beowulf was filmed in three weeks with the actors performing with sensors on their bodies. Post-production took a lot longer and was more controlled, Havaldar added. In comparison, most other films are shot over several months.

The impact of the technology which was nascent then can be felt in every other film, especially in superhero capers. For all his efforts, Havaldar received an Academy Award in 2017. His family moved to Zambia when he was four and stayed there for seven years. Upon his return, he joined St Vincent’s, where he forged a lifetime of memories. “I recall cycling with many of my friends. But what really stood out were my struggles with Marathi,” was Havaldar’s amused confession. “I was fluent in three Bantu (African) languages, but I couldn’t write or read Marathi. I failed the subject often,” he said, adding that his friends bailed him out.

He finished school in 1987 and went to study at IIT-Kharagpur and graduated in 1991. He finished his PhD in computer graphics and computer vision in 1996 from the University of Southern California and became a part-time faculty there. Talk inevitably turned to his Academy Award. He was recognized for his work in pioneering and establishing expression-based facial performance capture technology.

“I was pleased, surprised, humbled and honoured to get the Oscar. It was a culmination of eight years of hard work,” Havaldar said. Each year, the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences explores technologies that have had a wide-reaching impact on film making. Last year, after thorough research, investigation, and evaluation, they recognized the man responsible for a tectonic shift in modern film making. It is process that involves experts from the industry, researches and professors in the field.

“I had moved away from films; I was working in the game industry for (Activision’s) Blizzard Entertainment, when I received the call,” he said. Havaldar has strong roots in Pune where his parents and his wife’s family live. “I visit Pune every other year, but this is my first visit after five years,” he said. Which makes it the first time Pune’s first - and only - Oscar winner has come home since that momentous night in 2017.

At the moment, when Parag is not shaping young minds at USC, he is spearheading R&D at Blizzard. “The future lies in gaming, the trajectory of technology is more exciting. It’s about interacting with digital actors and game cinematics. The industry will move away from the current gaming format,” he said, while admitting that he will never say never on returning to films.

A body found in Pune, cops probing Maratha quota demand link

PUNE: The police found the mutilated body of a man near a railway track here along with a note in which he had purportedly written that he would commit suicide if the Maharashtra government does not grant reservation to the Maratha community by August 5.

The station master of Daundaj railway station informed the Jejuri police at around 6 am about a body lying close to the tracks, a police official said. The deceased was identified as Dattatray Tukaram Shinde, a resident of village Pingori in Pune's Purandar tehsil. He worked as a driver with a private travel firm in Shirur, the police said.

A note was found near the body, apparently written by Shinde, in which he said he would commit suicide by jumping into a river if the Maratha community does not get reservation by August 5, Superintendent of Police Sandip Patil said.

"We are investigating whether it is a case of suicide or he was run over by a train," he said. In another incident, the police in Wakad detained nine people, who threatened to commit suicide in support of the Maratha reservation demand, as a preventive measure.

They are members of Maratha groups Sambhaji Brigade and Chhava Sanghatana and had threatened to commit suicide on Saturday by jumping off the Pune Collectorate building, a police official said. They also demanded that the state government pays Rs 50 lakh as compensation to the family of Kakasaheb Shinde (27).

A Maratha community member, Shinde jumped to his death in Godavari river in Aurangabad district on July 23. The politically influential Maratha community, which constitutes around 30 per cent of the state's population, has been agitating for reservation in jobs and education sector.

Pune GST office busts tax scam

PUNE: The Directorate general of GST intelligence (DGGI) , Pune zonal unit, has arrested Shirish Shah (50), a resident of Mumbai, on charges of allegedly managing, operating and controlling 212 shell companies, some of which were used to funnel service tax charges away from government coffers.

As per probe documents released, one of Shah’s 212 companies, M/S Allied Computers International (Asia) ACI Ltd, issued fake invoices of Rs. 70 crore and Rs. 7.30 crore collected as service tax, none of which has been paid to the government.

Intelligence generated by DGGI Pune indicated that M/S ACI, holding a service tax registration number, is a shell company raising tax invoices by charging service tax without providing any service and moreover, these invoices are further used by companies identified as M/S Designtech Systems Ltd and M/s Skillar Enterprise India Private Ltd, for input credit.

As per the investigation, M/S Designtech is part of a tripartite agreement entered to in 2015 with the Andhra Pradesh state skill development corporation, and M /s Siemens Industry Software India Ltd, for setting up and operating skill development centres in Andhra Pradesh.

According to documents, under the contract, Rs. 300 crore was received by S Design Tech. Subsequently Rs. 200 crore was transferred to M/S Skillar by M/S Designtech out of which M/S Skillar mis-utilised invoices raised by M/S ACI, charging service tax to route public funds in an illegal manner.

M/S ACI is a shell company with no office and operated by Shah from an office premise situated at Dhobi Talao in Mumbai. “He had entire control over issuing tax invoices and had also deposited money in the bank account of M/S ACI from the respective companies,” the documents state. Shah had been on the radar of IT sleuths for some time, and is considered to be a master financial criminal.

The investigation was carried out by Ajitkumar Karthikeyan, senior intelligence officer, and Ajit Limaye and Kundan Pratap, intelligence officers of DGGI, under the guidance of Vaishali Patange, Deputy Director, DGGI, Pune unit.
