Unrest in Chakan day after Maratha protest

PUNE: Today, a day after Maratha protesters seeking reservation in government jobs and education blocked a highway and damaged vehicles in the industrial town and nearby areas.

Police said they have booked 4,000 people for Monday’s violence. Officials also hinted that the violence appeared pre-planned as protestors, some of whom they said were outsiders, came with swords petrol cans. “Some troublemakers had come with all preparation to create a disturbance,” Pune’s superintendent of police Sandip Patil said.

Maratha protesters also attacked policemen, damaged least 100 vehicles in Chakan and Khed, and blocked the Pune-Nashik highway for at least four hours on Monday. Four policemen and three civilians were injured in the violence as the police fired tear gas shells in the air to control the protesters. Police said constable Ajay Bhapkar, who was beaten up with rods during Monday’s violence, has slipped into a coma.

Those held up in Chakan, a town about 40 kilometres from Pune and known as an automobile hub, due to the violence returned to their homes late in the evening. “I came home at around 11:30 pm as the roads were blocked during the day,” Vinit Sahu, who works in manufacturing unit at Chakan, said on Tuesday. While roads were cleared by police, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation decided not to ply buses to Chakan, Nashik and Rajgurunagar from Swargate and Shivajinagar.

Monday’s protests came a day after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated his government’s commitment to reservations for Marathas and also assured a delegation headed by former chief minister Narayan Rane of withdrawing cases against agitators.

Class 10 Mathematics: Pune’s pass percentage is 34.68

PUNE: The results of Class 10 mathematics has not been encouraging. It has dropped to the lowest across the country and the state, with Pune lagging behind with an average of less than 35 per cent. The findings were revealed recently in the national achievement survey (NAS), conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The survey also showcased the district report card which showed that the average performance (mean percentage of correct responses) of students from Pune district is as low as 34.68 per cent, while the state average is 33.57 per cent.

In response to the findings of the survey, Meenakshi Raut, deputy director, education department Pune, said, “This data is not surprising, as we have been seeing this trend for the past few years now. The major reason behind this among many others is the fear associated with the subject. Students face a lot of pressure from school, parents and society.

“Mathematics should be demystified and fear should be eliminated through alternative teaching methods. The report might prove to be a starting point for the improvement.” The report showed that maximum students have difficulty in understanding the Number system. Only 24.23 per cent students in the Pune district were able to give the correct answers, as opposed to the 28.13 per cent in the state.

Students do not fare well in Coordinate Geometry. Only 27.20 per cent of students from Pune district were able to get correct answers while only 26.51 per cent of students got it right in the state. A majority of students seem to understand Algebra better as 36.26 per cent of students from Pune managed to get correct answers as opposed to 33.82 per cent in Maharashtra

In the other subjects, however, students from Pune schools have done better when compared to the state average. In Modern Indian language (MIL), students from Pune district scored the highest average of 62.54 per cent, as opposed to the state average of 57.39 per cent. It is then followed by Social Science (44.02 per cent), English (42.23 per cent) and Science (36.44 per cent).

In total, 3,154 students from 79 schools in the district participated in the survey. This is one of the largest national surveys conducted by the NCERT, spanning 1.5 million Class 10 students from 44,514 schools in 610 districts across the country.

PUNE: Shops in some parts of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad were shut for a few hours on Tuesday afternoon, but the city remained peaceful during the Maharashtra bandh called by the Maratha Seva Sangh and Maratha Kranti Morcha.

A man was injured and several vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting at Baramati near Pune. Joint police commissioner Ravindra Kadam said, "The community's members conducted corner meetings in the city and carried out morchas or rallies on a few roads. Pune to Singapore direct flight soon

PUNE: The wait for a flight to a new international destination from Pune airport is expected to end soon. Sources at the Pune airport told pune-news.com that a domestic airline may soon start a flight to Singapore. With the service, the number of international flights from Pune will go up to five.

“Although much details cannot be divulged, Pune airport will very soon have a flight connecting with Singapore. Details are being worked out,” said an airport official.

Sources at the airport said that Jet Airways was expected to begin the flight. However, when contacted, a Jet Airways spokesperson neither confirmed nor denied the information. “At this moment, no comments can be made on the topic and we have nothing to share. Any due announcement on the same will be made when the time comes,” the spokesperson stated. As of now, Pune airport has just four flights heading to international destinations.

A senior official from an airline that currently operates an international flight from Pune airport said that the city’s proximity with Mumbai and the airport being a defence one, were some of the reasons why there were fewer number of flights.

“Since it is a defence airport, there are many restrictions, which results in flights getting delayed. Moreover, there is the issue of load factor as well. In south India, there are many flights to places like Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi. With Pune so close to Mumbai, the fares are such that passengers prefer travelling from Mumbai,” the official said.

Sources said that more international flights were expected once the new terminal of the facility is ready. “The new terminal building will open a lot of avenues. However, one has to concentrate on increasing the length of the runway of the airport and the work should be simultaneous. For bigger aircraft to land, one needs a longer runway and apron area,” another AAI official pointed out.

Man dupes 25 people with firm’s fake online profile

PUNE: Creating fake online profile of a logistic firm, a man duped 25 people across India of over Rs 10 lakh in the past two months accepting business contracts.

The conman took advance from people but did not render any service to the clients. Yogesh Chandra Mishra (30), an employee of a transport company in Navi Peth, lodged a complaint with the Vishrambaug police, stating that the man used his company’s name, GST and PAN card details in the fake profile.

The police have registered a case of cheating and an offence under the Information Technology (IT) Act. Investigations revealed that the conman duped people from Chennai, Kolkata, Nashik, Delhi, Jabalpur, Gujrat and other parts of India. Mishra’s transport company has a few trucks. It has been in freight business for the past three years.

On May 2, a truck had gone to deliver some industrial components to Beed and was to return empty. The transport firm’s officials uploaded a query on an e-commerce website, and they received a call within a few minutes. The customer asked one of the company officials to send their bank account, PAN, GST number and other details. The information was shared with the possible customer.

After exchanging the information, the company officials started receiving calls from different parts of the country stating that they had booked the truck of the firm for cargo transportation. They claimed to have paid advance, but the truck did not turn up to pick up the freight.
