PUNE: ‘Kimie,’
a human milk pasteurizing machine developed and manufactured in
India by Shreeyash Electro Medicals was launched in Pune.
Dr. Uday Dewaskar, Director, Neonatal ICU, UCLA (University of
California and Los Angeles), Dr. Sudhir Waghmare, Director Shreeyash and
Dr. Kiran Purohit, President, Rotary Club of Pune South were present on the
occasion.
Insufficient lactation in mothers is a common problem that
results in depriving the new born infants of mother’s milk, the best
source of nutrition that protects the infants from illnesses and infections
that they are prone to.
This problem can be overcome by setting up ‘Human Milk Banks’
that collect mother’s milk from donors and preserve it for needy
infants. The heart of Human Milk Bank is Human Milk Pasteurizer
which has so far been imported from France. These imported machines require
250, sq.ft. of space and cost in the range of Rs. 50 lacs. Due to heavy initial
investment and high recurring costs, many hospitals can’t afford this facility,
thus depriving many infants of their rightful nourishment.
Pune based innovator and Director, Shreeyash Electro Medicals,
Dr. Sudhir Waghmare has invented the first portable Human Milk Pasteurizer,
‘Kimie’ that can pasteurize human milk from 15ml to 300ml. This
compact machine requires minimal space and costs only Rs. 8 lacs. This makes
setting up of Human Milk Banks easy and affordable for even small
Pediatric Hospitals and Healthcare Entrepreneurs.
“Kimie is a revolutionary innovation that has made world class
quality affordable, which is the need of the hour in a country like India,”
said Dr. Uday Dewaskar. “About 2 million child deaths can be prevented every
year through breastfeeding. I was therefore determined to design and develop a
world class machine that would be affordable for every hospital in India, so
that no child is deprived of the best source of nourishment that is mother’smilk,
“said Dr. Sudhir Waghmare.
‘Kimie’, is all set to create a network of human milk banks
across the country leading to a healthy and happy young generation.
