PUNE: Private companies have come forward to provide AC mini
buses for city’s public transport. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) city unit
had appealed to the firms to adopt some of the bus routes.
"The firms in the city have given positive response to
the appeal made by the party. These buses will be operated with the help of
Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). The party in its manifesto
had promised that such buses will be provided to the citizens," said a BJP
leader, while speaking to reporters.
These buses will be operated on busy routes in the city such
as Kothrud, Vadgaonsheri and Katraj. The private firms have sent their proposal
to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and PMPML in this regard.
A pilot run will be carried out for next three months. After
that the formula for revenue sharing between private firms and public transport
body will be decided. The rates of tickets and passes will be finalised once
the pilot project is complete.
The PMPML was established in 2007 by merging the then two
public transport bodies - Pune Municipal Transport (PMT) and Pimpri Chinchwad
Municipal Transport (PCMT). The mini buses are to be operated in both PMC and
PCMC areas.
The activists have time and again raised the issue of
non-availability of buses in the city. They claim that less number of buses
have caused problems to commuters. Overuse of buses have led to problems like
broken seats, frequent breakdowns and increasing maintenance charges.
Apart from mini buses, procurement of the midi buses is also
on the cards. Over 200 buses are to be bought. Over 10 lakh commuters use
public transport service every-day.
