PUNE: City’s
premier mountaineering organization Giripremi has organised India’s largest
civil expedition on India’s highest mountain- Mount Kangchenjunga in 2019 with
‘Kangchenjunga Eco Expedition 2019.’ Along with climbing, a group of
scientists, environmentalist and experts will study Kangchenjunga Biodiversity
area under Eco Project. The team of this project was announced in Pune in a
ceremony organised for celebration of World Environment Day.
Eco Project team consists Dr. Shrikant Karlekar (former head,
Dept. of Geography, S.P. College, Pune), Ushaprabha Page (Founder President
Giripremi and Environmentalist), Dr. Raymond Duraiswami (Assistant Professor,
Dept. of Geology, SPPU), Dr. Sanjeev Nalavade (Retd. Assistant Professor,
Fergusson College), Abhijeet Ghorpade (OSD Media, Coordination Cell, SPPU
and Editor at Bhavtal Magazine) and Dr. Avinash Kandekar (Assistant Professor,
Dept. of Geography, SPPU and Convener of ‘Eco Project’ of Kangchenjunga Eco
Expedition 2019).
Dr. Karlekar will study geomorphology and landform, Page
will study Alpine Flora, Dr. Duraiswami will contribute in Geology and Environmental
Hydrology, Dr. Nalavade will study biodiversity and fauna, Ghorpade will handle
Environmental Communication and Dr. Kandekar will contribute in GIS Mapping and
hydro chemical analysis.
Dr. Karlekar said, “This project is an interesting project
itself. This is first time mountaineers and researchers coming together to work
towards environment. It will be a great opportunity for us to collect
invaluable data. Researcher is always data thirsty, I am extremely happy to be
a part of such noble project.”
Dr. Duraiswami said, “In todays world, Himalaya is the third
pole. It is still most unexplored territory. Himalayas have lot to offer, and
such projects serve the purpose. As a researcher, I am glad to be part of Eco
Project.” Veteran mountaineer and leader of Kangchenjunga Eco
Expedition, Umesh Zirpe explained the expedition and importance of eco
project. He said, “Kangchenjunga Eco Expedition 2019 will be unique in several
ways. It is India’s largest civilian expedition."
