PUNE: A month
after former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar launched Mission Young India Fit India,
it remains on paper. Savitribai Phule Pune University has no action plan about
the programme launched with much fanfare.
There were voices of concern from various quarters within the
varsity at the time of the launch as no student was invited despite the
authorities saying that the mission is to promote fitness among students.
Moreover, there were no details about the mission given during
the speeches or after. Deepak Mane, head of the department of Physical Education,
had no answers then about the budget for the mission, the plan of action and
the absence of students on the list of invitees to the event.
He said it should be “looked at in a positive manner.” He
added that there would be a meeting about an action plan. A month later,
nothing has been done, he said. When questioned, Mane said, “We are doing our
duty.”
A student on the condition of anonymity said, “Many varsity officials feel they are not answerable to anyone and half the schemes announced remain on paper. Living in the hostels is pitiable and the mess food is not good. There are no facilities for disabled students. They must do more for the students.”
