PUNE: Kavitha Deepak Reddy, a 44-year-old housewife and mother of two from Vimannagar overcame all odds to complete the Boston Marathon on April 16. She was the only woman runner to qualify for the race from Pune.

One of the six marathon majors, runners need to qualify for the marathon from their respective age category before they can participate in the event. The other majors are the New York Marathon, Chicago Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon and Tokyo Marathon.

“The Boston Marathon is like the Olympics for amateur runners. It is a special feeling to have qualified for the prestigious event,” said Kavitha. “It was very challenging marathon given the weather conditions this year. It was rainy and there was strong wind which made it difficult to finish the course,” she added. She completed the Boston Marathon, clocking a time of 3:34:26, falling short of her personal best of 3:33

Kavitha began running to remain fit after she was diagnosed with thyroid disease. The habit though, soon turned into an obsession. “It all started back in September 2013 and soon it became a daily routine,” she said.

Kavitha currently has a fixed weekly routine to be able to compete at the international level. Her routine includes five days of running, one day of CrossFit, three days of body weight training and one weekly strength training session. She plans to compete in all the marathon majors and challenge herself every step of the way.
