PIFF announces Marathi films selected for Competition

PUNE: The 16th edition of Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) organized by the Pune Film Foundation and the Maharashtra Government will take place in Pune between January 11th and 18th 2018.

Marathi Feature films shortlisted for competition, list of jury and presence of PIFF Forum were announced by Dr. Jabbar Patel, the Festival Director, PIFF during a Press Conference held in the city today.

Makrand Sathe, Selection Committee Member, Samar Nakhate, Vice Chairman, PIFF Bhupendra Canthola, Director, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Prakash Magdum, Director, National Film Archives of India (NFAI) Abhijeet Randive, Creative Head & Selection Committee Member were also present on the occasion.

This year, seven Marathi films across various genres have been shortlisted in the competition at PIFF. Apart from already released and popular films like ‘Muramba’, ‘Faster Fene’ and ‘Kachcha Limbu’; four yet unreleased films- ‘Pimpal’, ‘Ziprya’, ‘Nashibvaan’and ‘Mhorkya’ have made it to the list.

PIFF will have a special section ‘Raj Kapoor Retrospective’ as an empathy and tribute to R.K Studio because of their recent loss to fire. Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor will be present at PIFF to handover the most valuable negatives of 23 Raj Kapoor’s movies to for preservation at NFAI was informed by Dr. Patel.

Special screening of movies based on social issues of women like Teen Kanya (Satyajit Ray) Parineeta (Bimal Roy), Avargal (K Balchandra), Gejje Pooje (Putanna Kanagal) and Sankarabharanam (K Vishwanath) will be held at PIFF.

A unique initiative has been started concurrently to the festival called the PIFF Forum, while highlighting this Dr. Patel said, “This year it is bigger platform where a lot of activities for aspiring writers, producers and directorslike workshops, seminars, panel discussions, media interactions, networking sessions, exhibition stalls etc. will take place.The key intention of PIFF Forum is to educate those interested in filmmaking without letting it become dull or stale. One can directly interact with several successful and reputed film personalities.”

Through January 13th to 17th, PIFF Forum will have various activities and sessions starting with ‘Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture’ on Script writing which will be undertaken by Rodrigo Plá, Maurizio Nichetti and Kamlesh Pandey. While, a session ‘Music and Raj Kapoor’ will be conducted by Sushrut Vaidya and ‘Interaction on Raj Kapoor &his films will be moderated by Shubhash Ghai. 

Mohan Krishnan will be taking a session on ‘Digital Post Production-An Overview’. Also, he will be conducting another session ‘Film Preservation – Need of the Hour’ along with Prakash Magdum. A talk on ‘Fate of Marathi cinema’ will be conjointly conducted by Sanjay Patil, Sanjay Chabria and Nitin Vaidya. Vimukhti Jayasundara will be taking Film making workshop. Luanda Fernandes will be taking session on ‘Contemporary Argentine Cinema’.

‘Trends in the Cinema and Muktiplex business’ will be discussed by Rahul Puri. And, a night of Sufi music and ghazals- ‘Sukhan’ by Om Bhuthar will also be taken place at PIFF Forum.
