PUNE: All
colleges affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) may soon have a
wellness cell dedicated to the mental health of students.
The primary focus of the cell would be to conduct lectures and
counselling sessions for the students suffering from any kind of behavioural
issues/disorders. "The wellness cell programme is in its nascent stage
now. The first step is orientation session for all districts. The SPPU has jurisdiction
over three districts such as Nashik, Ahmednagar and Pune," Nitin Patil,
state disabilities commissioner, said.
The first orientation session will be held on January 19,
which will see participation of about 115 colleges. "This project is being
done in collaboration with units of National Service Scheme across affiliated
units. The representatives from 115 colleges will be present for the session.
We are hoping that all colleges with psychology department will open a cell to
help students at least once a week," Patil added.
Deepak Walokar, director, Karve Institute of Social Service,
said, "Wellness cells can play an important role of creative awareness
about mental health issues, something which is often neglected in our
country."
