Mercury plunges to 10.5°C as Christmas spirit sets in

PUNE: The city's minimum temperature touched the 10°C-mark on Thursday, giving citizens a chill feeling on the day the St Patrick’s Cathedral organised its Christmas float ushering in the Yuletide spirit.

On Thursday, the mercury plunged to 10.5°C - the lowest temperature of the post-monsoon and winter season so far in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated a rise in minimum temperature by a degree or so during the next couple of days. The minimum temperature may dip to 10°C on December 24 and again climb to 11°C on the Christmas Day, an IMD forecast said.

A K Srivastava , the head of the climate monitoring and analysis group, IMD, Pune, told that cold northerly winds had begun to flow over northern and central parts of Maharashtra with the easterly influence becoming negligible.

"The jet stream, which is the upper-level strong and cold wind, is passing through Gujrat and Maharashtra and causing a dip in temperatures here. The minimum temperature is likely to hover around the normal range for the next couple of days," Srivastava said.
