PUNE: The City
Church near the Ornella’s High School in Nana Peth, Pune is completing 225 years
on December 8 and the church has organized various programs like procession,
blessings and discourses of priests, inauguration of the cornerstone, felicitation,
religious rituals and distribution of offerings to mark the occasion.
Also, Peshwa Madhavrao had donated about 4 acre land of the
City Church and the surrounding area. Nana Fadnavis, as the manager of
Peshawas, provided financial help for the construction of the Church on behalf
of the Peshwas. The foundation was laid for the the grand church on 8 December
1792 and a shade was erected and the building in stages.
As a mark of gratitude for this generosity shown by Shrimant
Peshwa, the descendents of Peshwa will be felicitated at the occasion. Vinayakrao
Peshwe and his nephew Mahendra Peshwe from the Peshwas family will receive the
felicitation.
Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao will be present as the chief
guest at this grand ceremony which will be held at 6 pm in the City Church
premise. Bishop Thomas Dabre of Pune Diocese, Bishop Valerian DeSouza, Father
Andrew Fernandes (S.J.), Father Malcolm Sylvera, Vicar General of Pune, chief
priest of City Church Salvador Pinto and descendents of Peshwa will be present
on the stage at the ceremony.
A marble cornerstone depicting all bishops till today will be
inaugurated in the church followed by grand procession. This procession will
leave from City Church and pass through Quartergate Chowk, Dastoor Meher Marg,
Camp and will return to City Church.
The procession will be lead by the famous St. Francis Band of
Mumbai while chief priest of City Church Salvador Pinto and other priests and
nuns as well as 2000 brethren and sisters from Christian community will
participate in the procession with placards, flags and banners in hand,
chanting prayers and songs. Sarvjanik Mandals along with people of various
faith besides Christian community will decorate the squares at many places on
this route and welcome it with the shower of flowers.
