Robbers hijack trucks, steal goods worth Rs 19 cr

PUNE: Two container trucks carrying tobacco products were waylaid and their contents, including cigarettes worth Rs 18.90 crore and chewing tobacco worth Rs 14 lakh, was robbed by two gangs of unidentified men in the district.

A container carrying 865 cartons of cigarettes was robbed after it left Ranjangaon about 50km from Pune, while another container carrying tobacco was robbed at Ane Ghat section near Junnar about 95km from here. The first container was found empty near Aurangabad and the tobacco container was found near Sanaswadi about 45km from here on Saturday.

Maruti Khedkar, assistant inspector of Ale Phata police, told pune-news.com that, Amol Shinde of Sangamner, the driver of a transport operator, loaded about 1,458 bags of chewing tobacco for delivery in Kalyan. "Shinde reached Ane Ghat via Ahmednagar early on Sunday when a white Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) blocked the truck's way," Khedkar said.

Five men got off the SUV and forced Shinde out of the truck cabin at pistol point. "One of the robbers took possession of the truck. They forced Shinde into the SUV and left the spot," Khedkar added.

Shinde was dumped after a few km. "He approached the police station and lodged a complaint against the suspects. He also told us that the SUV used by the suspects did not have a registration number. We have registered an offence under section 395 (dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Indian Arms Act," Khedkar said.

On Thursday evening, a container truck containing 865 boxes of cigarettes worth Rs 18.90 crore left a cigarette manufacturing company in Ranjangaon MIDC for Ambernath in Thane district. When the truck did not reach its destination on Friday, the owner of the logistics company in Vadgaonsheri lodged a cheating with the Ranjangaon MIDC police.


The driver and the truck were traced to Aurangabad on Saturday. The cigarette cartons were missing from the truck, Amarnath Waghmode, inspector of Ranjangaon MIDC police, said. Waghmode said the driver lodged a complaint of robbery with the Aurangabad Rural police.
