PUNE: Despite
being embroiled in controversies, San Francisco-based ride aggregator Uber
completed its five billionth trip globally in May this year, the company said
in a statement.
Out of the 156 trips started simultaneously in the morning to
put Uber over the five billionth mark, 19 were from India. Drivers from Pune, Bangalore,
Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow,
Mumbai were part of this milestone, the company said.
Uber plans to give $ 500 to each of the 156 drivers involved
as a reward. “Really excited to see that multiple cities across India have
contributed to the 5 billionth trip mark. This is testimony to the phenomenal
growth trajectory that hundreds of thousands of driver partners have helped
fuel. We are humbled to see so many entrepreneurial dreams come true,” said
Amit Jain, President, Uber India & South Asia.
